Roald Dahl and the real Mrs Pratchett

Living in Cardiff, and being a children’s author, it is difficult to escape the ghost of Roald Dahl, the man my first publisher described, without evidence, as “the world’s number one storyteller”. This is certainly not how I see this entitled reactionary, as I made it clear when opposing the Labour Cardiff council spending a fortune in public money celebrating his centenary. Since then his misogyny and open antisemitism has thankfully received a lot more publicity, but to me that’s just the thin end of the wedge. I thought it might be instructive to look more deeply into his famous “mouse in the sweets” episode, and here is the result.
